Debt Relief Orders

For people who find themselves in a situation where their debt is overwhelming and they are unable to meet the cost of the petition for their own bankruptcy. The government introduced debt relief orders in 2009.

If you have debts totalling less than £15,000, your total assets are less than £300 and you are unable to pay more than £50 per month it may be worth considering a debt relief order. Your creditors may even request that you consider this option.

We strongly suggest approaching your local Citizens Advice Bureau to discuss whether they can act for you in this way or put you in touch with others locally who are authorised to do so.

If you have been successful in your application for a debt relief order your creditors will no longer be able to take further action against you in regards to recovering the debt. After one year these debts should then be discharged and therefore no longer exist.
